Texas A&M senior cornerbacks Will Lee III and Tyreek Chappell spoke to the media during Tuesday’s player availability ahead of the Aggies’ critical home matchup vs. Mississippi State on Saturday night, needing to keep the undefeated season alive and protect home field.
Saturday’s 16-10 win over Auburn was headlined by the Aggies’ elite defense, which limited the Tigers to 176 total yards and just 52 rushing yards. At the same time, Lee, Chappell, and redshirt sophomore cornerback Dezz Ricks completely shut down Auburn star wide receiver Cam Coleman, who recorded just four receptions for 18 yards.
Ricks, who has more than lived up to his lofty preseason expectations, allowing just seven receptions for 66 yards, including three pass deflections in all four wins, shut down every team’s No. 1 receiver, but will be challenged against Mississippi State wide receiver Brenen Thompson, who has racked up 20 receptions, 324 yards, and three touchdowns this season.
For those of us who were in “wait and see” mode regarding Ricks’s progress, Will Lee always knew that his former five-star teammate was set to explode this season, discussing their strong bond on Tuesday.
“Oh yeah, that’s my dog” Lee stated. “You know like, I always knew what Dezz (Ricks) could do. Everybody else is shocked and seeing what he does, I see it all the time. Just playing with Dezz since last year, Dezz probably don’t even know, I knew Dezz when he got to IMG, so like, I always been watching him. Even though I’m older, I always watch everybody’s game, but Dez was always a baller, so, maybe just need a little confidence, and get used to the system a little bit more. Yeah, Dezz is a dog.”
Texas A&M’s secondary is improving every week, and with Ricks already playing at an elite level, Texas A&M’s defense could replicate its performance against the Tigers.
