The Arizona Cardinals suffered another blow to the running back room this week. James Conner is already out for the season, needing surgery on his foot. On Wednesday, the news got worse. Current starting running back Trey Benson suffered a knee injury at the end of the Cardinals’ 23-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last Thursday and will miss four to six weeks after surgery to repair his meniscus. He was placed on injured reserve, meaning the earliest he can return is in Week 10 after the Cardinals have played four games.
So what is next for the Cardinals at running back, and who should you pick up and start on your fantasy team?
They have Michael Carter, Emari Demercado and Bam Knight on the roster at running back.
The question comes down to Carter and Demercado.
Emari Demercado or Michael Carter on your fantasy team now?
Demercado scored a touchdown against Seattle, returning to the third-down and passing-down role he held before this season. He is the one listed at the top of the depth chart.
The Cardinals could go a couple of ways with their running back rotation. Demercado could become the featured back with Carter backing him up. Knight could then slide into the passing-down role.
What seems more likely is that Demercado and Carter will split regular carries and Demercado will get the third-down and passing-down snaps, which means that Demercado will have more opportunities with the ball in his hands. He will have rushing attempts and targets in the passing game.
But the Cardinals will likely go with the hot hand, so if Carter gets hot, they will ride him.
As for your fantasy team, your better bet is probably Demercado.
