D.J. Reed is now officially on the Detroit Lions injured reserve. The Lions placed the starting cornerback on I.R. as part of a cluster of roster moves on Wednesday ahead of the team’s Week 5 trip to Cincinnati.
Reed suffered a hamstring injury in the Week 4 win over Cleveland that required him to be carried off the Ford Field turf on a cart. His injury is not season-ending and will not require surgery, but Reed will miss the Lions’ next four games before he is eligible to return.
Reed’s move to the I.R. created another opening on Detroit’s 53-man active roster, as the Lions already had one vacancy after placing safety Daniel Thomas on I.R. over the weekend. The team filled the active roster spots with a couple of defenders with experience in the den.
Safety Loren Strickland and linebacker Ty Summers are now on the 53-man list. Strickland has been on the Lions’ practice squad all season. The second-year safety figures to see action on special teams, where Thomas made his mark.
Summers was just signed to the practice squad on Tuesday. Detroit’s leading tackler in the final two preseason games of the 2024 exhibition season, Summers played in 16 games for the Giants in 2024, including two starts. Like Strickland, the move is primarily for special teams purposes.
The two new openings on the practice squad were immediately filled, too. The well-reported addition of CB Tre Flowers was made official on Wednesday, and the Lions also brought back cornerback Nick Whiteside to the practice squad. Whiteside, a UFL standout with Detroit roots, had a strong training camp and knows the Lions defense well. Both Flowers and Whiteside are physical, man-coverage, outside-only corners.
Detroit also officially started the three-week activation window on defensive tackle Alim McNeill.
