Welcome back, Taysom Hill. The New Orleans Saints‘ do-it-all superstar is still working his way back from last season’s knee injury, but he has a lot to offer just as a presence at meetings in the quarterbacks room. For one thing, he’s the only Saints coach or QB in those meetings to ever win a game. Compare their records:
- Head coach Kellen Moore: 0-2 with the Dallas Cowboys in 2015
- Offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier: 0-2 with the Saints from 1996 to 1997
- Quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien: 0-3-1 with the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts from 2013 to 2017
Hill went 7-2 as a starter for the Saints during the 2020 and 2021 seasons; Spencer Rattler, of course, is now 0-10. Jake Haener hasn’t won a game. Rookies Tyler Shough and Hunter Dekkers haven’t gotten an opportunity. Yet. When it comes to preparing for a start and seeing it through to claim victory, Hill is the only person in the quarterbacks room who can say he’s done it before in the NFL.
Obviously that isn’t everything that goes into finding success at the pro level. Sean Payton famously never won a game as a starting quarterback. And Hill’s efforts to help the team most figure to lie where they always have — running the ball, catching passes, and blocking for his teammates (and sometimes blocking punts). He’s a special talent. Let’s see if he’s able to suit up this Sunday against the New York Giants.
