Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is off to an encouraging start to his second season, and first under Ben Johnson. But he’s been at his best in the big moments, when the game is on the line.
That was on display in Sunday’s 25-24 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, where Williams led the Bears on an 11-play, 69-yard touchdown drive that culminated in a D’Andre Swift score. On that drive, Williams completed 4-of-5 passes for 42 yards and had a six-yard run to set the team up for their game-winning touchdown.
It was officially Williams’ second game-winning drive in his young career, although he should have more after the Bears failed to close out games despite Williams putting them in a position to win. Those have been the situations where Williams has thrived.
“I feel more comfortable in those moments,” Williams said. “My heart rate drops, everything kind of settles in and at the got to have it moments. I think I’ve done a good job with that over my career in those got to have it moments. I think it comes from the hard work throughout the week and the belief in my teammates.”
Head coach Ben Johnson has spoken about Williams’ ability to create when a play breaks down, and that’s certainly a factor with the game on the line. Regardless, Williams has shown an ability to rise to the occasion when the game is on the line, and, more often than not, he’s delivered.
