How will the Boston Celtics play this season with Jayson Tatum injured and a retooling roster? With high-profile exits in free agency and trades like Al Horford, Luke Kornet, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis, the team will not be the mismatch-hunting monster it once was. But it will also likely lean into the existing strengths of the players it does still have on the roster, as Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla recently broke down in an appearance on the “Zolak and Bertrand” show this past Wednesday (Oct. 1) on 98.5 the Sports Hub.

“Listen, everything comes down to: How can we take advantage of the roster and the strengths that we have?” asked Mazzulla rhetorically. “If you take a look at our team dynamics over the past two years, 3s were easy because there were five guys on the floor at all times that could shoot.”

“This is the first year we don’t have a stretch five,” added the Celtics coach, perhaps hinting at his level of confidence in Neemias Queta’s new shot from beyond the arc as much as it does about the unlikely prospect of vet forward Chris Boucher starting.

“I think your shot profile is always going to match the strengths of your roster, and so we have different types of strengths,” he continued.

“We’re a little bit younger. We’re a little bit faster. We’re a little bit more athletic, so at the end of the day, we’re just going to take shots that the defense gives us, and we’re going to look to find different ways to create 2-on-1s.”
