Oct. 3—TRINITY — Falkville notched their largest win of the season, 57-16 on the road at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy on Thursday night, doubling their highest scoring game of the year.
The Blue Devils’ offense just couldn’t be contained, scoring on five of six first-half drives. For Decatur Heritage, it was a tough night on defense, only bringing Falkville to a stop twice in the entire game.
By halftime Falkville was up 44-6, thanks in large part to Falkville’s Eli Harris. The senior receiver had three passing touchdowns and over 100 receiving yards on offense. On the other side of the ball, Harris picked up three interceptions and a pass deflection.
“He’s kind of our heartbeat. He gives us juice and keeps us going,” said Falkville head coach Seth Ward. “We’ve been waiting for him to have a big night defensively.”
Decatur Heritage started off the game with a 12-yard passing touchdown from quarterback Luke Wickwire connected to receiver Travis Kurecki, however Falkville then responded with seven straight scores.
Falkville’s Brodie Bennett opened it up for the Blue Devils with a 15-yard touchdown run. Falkville then scored three more times with the rush. Logan Fowler had a 47-yard touchdown, then Reed Dilliard added touchdown runs of seven and 14 yards to put Falkville up 30-6 halfway through the second quarter.
Falkville’s Harris then caught three straight touchdown passes, extending the lead to 51-6. The senior caught a touchdown pass from Dillard for four yards then 24 yards. After halftime, Harris picked up a 40-yard touchdown reception from Falkville’s Samuel Jacobs.
“We’ve kind of figured things out. Coming in early, we knew what things were about,” Ward said. “We knew it would be three or four games, and we’re just proud of their progress.”
Halfway through the third quarter, Decatur Heritage’s Grant Rogers hit a 30-yard field goal to cut Falkville’s lead to 51-9.
But Falkville’s Reed Rogers scored two minutes later with an 11-yard touchdown run to put the Blue Devils back up 57-9. Late in the fourth quarter, Decatur Heritage’s Wickwire hit Kurecki for a 12-yard touchdown to cut the lead to the final 57-16 tally.
“I’ve been in the locker room, in the gym, after practice, even before today’s game, I’ve been telling them that these past two weeks is what’s going to get us steamrolling into the playoffs.” Harris said.
Next week both teams return to region play. Falkville (4-2) goes to Susan Moore (2-4), while Decatur Heritage (1-5) stays at home to face Tanner (1-5).
