Saints star Taysom Hill says knee injury involved five torn ligaments, not one

One of the staples of the New Orleans Saints‘ offense over the past few iterations of the franchise has been Taysom Hill, a player like none other who is able to do things that have not been seen in the sport, pretty much ever. A player who can line up anywhere on offense aside from the offensive line, as well as multiple special teams roles, Hill has become an invaluable component to the Saints over time.

Unfortunately, during the 2024 season, he suffered a major knee injury during a play against the Los Angeles Rams and missed the remainder of the year due to it. Initially, it was regarded as an ACL injury with additional damage, but it was unclear what the full extent of the issue truly was. Recently, however, Hill discussed the injuries he sustained, which included multiple other ligaments being torn in addition to the already brutal ACL issue.

Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football made note of this discussion, in which Hill stated he had to have all four ligaments of his posterolateral corner (PLC) repaired, as they were all torn alongside the ACL. It’s an uncommon combination of injuries, but in Hill’s case it’s to be expected.

The PLC is typically injured with severe lateral movements in the knee, typically alongside a PCL tear, but in this case, it was actually alongside the ACL instead, which is also a relatively expected outcome. Given it was a contact injury, and one caused by immense force to the front of the knee (a tackle utilizing the helmet) causing hyperextension, this all checks out with the resulting injuries he mentioned. You can find his full media availability session right here.

It is a positive that they were able to identify and repair this additional ligament damage as soon as they did, as if they had not recognized it, there is a chance the ACL repair would have been at risk for failure. Many medical resources link the two together and note that ACL repair failures can be caused by a PLC injury being left undiagnosed. The doctors did a good job catching it and dealing with it right away.

Hill already returning to the practice field and starting to get some reps in is an extremely positive testament to modern medicine, and hopefully indicates he will be able to continue to ramp up to playing speed in the coming days or weeks. He’s officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game with the New York Giants.
