While the Oklahoma City Thunder will run it back with mostly the same roster, one new addition is Nikola Topic. The 20-year-old missed all of last season as he recovered from a torn ACL. Now, he joins the reigning NBA champion as the lottery talent hopes to develop.
The Thunder added Topic with the No. 12 pick of the 2024 NBA draft. The gifted lottery pick gives the best team in the league a long-term project who could help their backup ball-handler role.
The Thunder will get their first chance to see him play with mostly NBA teammates in the upcoming preseason slate. He’s one of the more intriguing storylines to watch as they will likely sit out their starters for most of the two-week slate.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
“He just understands how to play basketball, if I had to sum it up in one sentence. He sees the game, he’s poised, he has size and is strong. He doesn’t step outside of what he knows what to do. He’s very solid. I would say his gift is seeing the floor, seeing the game, playing for the next possession. It’s hard for players to get a natural feel and see of the game. He’s a very good player.”
Chet Holmgren
“It really stands out the way he sees the game. Even without the ball in his hands. The way he cuts and finds open space. Sees plays ahead of him and gets the ball out of his hands early. It’s impressive coming from a young guy but that’s what got him noticed in the first place. Just being able to see and read the game.”
Isaiah Hartenstein
“He’s been great. I think for him coming in, he does a great job of controlling the pace, pushing the ball. Great IQ. Can pass the ball really good. You can see how much he can get better at. That’s a promising thing. With a coach like Mark, he’ll get you chances and opportunities to get better. I think he’s in a great spot.”
Cason Wallace
“It’s fun playing with him. He’s a great point guard. He sees the floor very well. Makes very minimal mistakes. He’s fun to play with.”
Jaylin Williams
“You could see he just really reads the game. Great passer, great facilitator out there.”
Mark Daigneault
“He’s shown an immense amount of maturity for a young person. He’s got great awareness. Awareness for himself. Awareness for his team, regardless of the score or the game. At the same time, the goal of the camp is to try to build an identity. Emphasize the fundamentals and habits that will help with that identity. And get ourselves collectively ready for an 82-game season. Let the individual roles and players emerge from that process.”
