Clutch.
After a quiet first three quarters on Sunday, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix came to lead with three scoring drives in the fourth quarter as the team scored 18 unanswered points in a 21-17 comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Yeah, I mean listen, he’s a competitor,” coach Sean Payton said of Nix after the upset win. “There were a handful of plays in the first half that I know he’d want back. And look, the delay of game was my fault, spitting it out. But that all being said, man, you can feel his leadership when it matters and then you can feel the confidence with his teammates when it matters. So, he played exceptional in the second half.”
Nix went 9-of-10 passing for 126 passing yards in the fourth quarter with one touchdown pass and three scoring drives. So what clicked in those final 15 minutes?
“Honestly, I’m not sure,” Nix said. “We just got in some tempo. We found successful plays first down after first down, got some rhythm offensively and started making plays work. Then scored a touchdown, and once we scored the first touchdown, we kind of felt good for our rhythm and momentum and we did it again.”
After knocking off the defending Super Bowl champions, the Broncos have perhaps the most impressive win of the Payton era, and Nix has the first clutch comeback victory of his young career. Denver is now 3-2, and the team’s confidence is growing.
“It’s awesome,” Nix said. “It’s a great win. It proves that we can go on the road and beat these tough teams and we can be a tough team to play. So that’s good for our confidence. It’s good for going on this trip. A lot of teams struggle before they go to London, but we focused on this trip, we focused on this game and we went out and got it done. It was good for us.”
After the upset win in Philly, the Broncos took an overnight flight to England ahead of their Week 6 game against the New York Jets in London. Nix, who has nine total touchdowns through five games, will look to keep the positive momentum going as the team prepares for that U.K. showdown.
