Armand Membou hits rookie wall in New York Jets' Week 5 loss vs. the Cowboys

The New York Jets were embarrassed in Week 5, losing 37-22 to the Dallas Cowboys. One of the disappointing performances was that of rookie offensive tackle Armand Membou.

Membou appeared to have hit a rookie wall against the Cowboys (3-2-1).

Discipline was a major issue. Membou was whistled for a season-high four penalties, one of which was declined.

All of Membou’s accepted penalties were of different varieties, too. He was penalized for offensive holding, a false start, and ineligible man downfield. The college rules regarding ineligible downfield are considerably different from the pro rule. Muscle memory was an issue there for the former Missouri standout.

Membou also struggled in pass protection. He was credited with allowing a season-high five pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.

Starting quarterback Justin Fields was sacked on five occasions. It’s worth acknowledging Fields needs to speed up his release, but Membou was still a liability in pass protection.

Membou allowed three or fewer QB pressures in the Jets’ opening three contests. In the previous two outings, he’s allowed nine total pressures, but has only been assigned blame for one sack all campaign.

The rookie finds himself in a mini slump, but he’s talented enough to snap out of it soon. There’s no reason to panic.
