LSU football was forced to make a change on the offensive line just ahead of the Tigers’ 24-19 loss at Ole Miss in Week 5. LSU right tackle Weston Davis broke his nose and was possibly concussed in pregame warmups, resulting in true freshman Carius Curne making his first career start.
After LSU got a bye in Week 6, Tigers’ head coach Brian Kelly said Davis is ready to go for LSU’s meeting vs. South Carolina this Saturday.
“I think we’ll list Weston as a go,” Kelly said at his press conference on Monday.
Davis, a redshirt freshman who was a five-star recruit in the class of 2024, has struggled in his first year as a starter. According to PFF, Davis’s offensive grade through four games is 40.8. He’s allowed 14 pressures in pass protection and lacks consistency as a run blocker.
Kelly was asked about the possibility of a change earlier this season, but affirmed Davis’s status as a starter.
Curne didn’t fare much better when he got a chance vs. Ole Miss. The talented freshman showed flashes, but was responsible for multiple blown blocks in the run game.
Now healthy, Davis is returning to the starting lineup, and Kelly isn’t entertaining much of a competition.
“Carius is there if Weston needs a blow,” Kelly said.
Curne could still find his way on the field this week, though. LSU left guard Paul Mubenga is questionable and Kelly said Curne is an option there.
At 4-1, LSU is still in the College Football Playoff race, but LSU needs the offensive line to turn it around. LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier needs time to throw the ball down the field and LSU is counting on its run game to improve.
