NFL insider doesn't think Rams will make 'Ramsey level trade' at CB this season

The Los Angeles Rams‘ biggest flaw heading into Week 6 is at cornerback.

After allowing an average of 147 passing yards in the first two games of the season, L.A. has given up at least 200 passing yards in each of the past three games, all without veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon.

One would think the Rams need to bring in at least one new player to revamp the secondary, but head coach Sean McVay says that the team hasn’t talked about upgrading the cornerback room.

Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer agrees and thinks the more recent Rams’ history with moves is more likely than their bigger, splashier moves of the past.

They see corners as speed bumps in today’s NFL, rather than stop signs, which is why they’ve prioritized getting to the quarterback over affecting the guys he’s throwing to. That has led to heavy investment in the pass rush, which has allowed for the Rams to have one of the NFL’s best fronts, even after post-Aaron Donald. … Could the front office take a look at finding some corner help before the trade deadline? Sure. I don’t think it’ll be at a Jalen Ramsey 2019-level trade.”

The Ramsey trade helped turn the Rams into a clear contender, but the cost was great. L.A. doesn’t seem interested in doing that type of move again, even if there are options out there. The Rams didn’t make any changes in the unit over the offseason, either, through the draft or free agency. McVay and defensive coordinator Chris Shula simply have too much faith in the unit as a whole, especially the defensive line.

Early in the season, this strategy worked. The Rams’ secondary was shockingly among the best in the league. But without Witherspoon, the group has fallen off. And barring any major changes in thought, this unit will likely remain the same for the time being.
