Barcelona midfielder and captain Frenkie de Jong has openly criticised La Liga’s decision to stage the upcoming Villarreal vs Barcelona clash in the United States, describing it as unfair and damaging to both the competition and the players.
His remarks came during a press conference with the Netherlands national team ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Malta.
It is worth noting that Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, has officially confirmed that the fixture will take place on December 20th in Miami.
The announcement has already stirred debate, and De Jong’s firm stance has only intensified the discussion.
De Jong against the idea
Speaking to Voetbal (h/t Mundo Deportivo), De Jong did not hold back his opinion on the matter.
He said, “I don’t like that we are going to play there, and I don’t agree with it.
“It’s not fair for the competition. I don’t like it, and I don’t think it’s good for the players.
“We always complain about the match schedule and excessive travel,” referring to the long flight of more than 8,000 km the teams will have to make.

He further explained his understanding of why the league would make such a decision, but reiterated his disagreement.
“For the clubs, it is about expanding their brand globally. That’s probably what it’s all about. I understand the position, but I wouldn’t accept it, and I don’t agree with it.”
Koeman backs De Jong’s comments
Lastly, the Barcelona captain emphasised that players will bear the brunt of such decisions.
“The clubs are going to profit from this, but I don’t agree with playing a league game in Miami. I understand that other clubs don’t agree,” he added.
Meanwhile, Netherlands head coach and Barcelona legend Ronald Koeman also condemned the idea, aligning with De Jong’s views.
“It makes no sense. It’s ridiculous. Frenkie gives a good explanation. It’s not fair.
“Villarreal-FC Barcelona is always a difficult away game for Barça, and now they’re playing it on neutral ground.
“There will be more Barcelona fans in the stands than Villarreal fans. So it’s not fair either,” said Koeman.
