Barcelona have all but secured the contract extension of Frenkie de Jong, whose current deal expires at the end of the season.
The Blaugrana are also progressing with the renewal talks of Eric Garcia, who also has a contract running out in 2026.
However, the La Liga champions are taking a different approach with another player who finds himself in a similar situation – Andreas Christensen.
Barcelona hesitant despite Christensen’s willingness
According to MARCA, Barcelona’s sporting management intends to wait a few more months before making a decision on Christensen’s future, even though his current contract runs down in June 2026.
The 29-year-old Danish international has had an intermittent role this season, although he remains one of Hansi Flick’s main alternatives in central defence.
The coaching and executive staff are pleased with both his performances and his attitude. However, the club have not yet taken any steps towards renewing his contract.

Barcelona want to have a clear picture of the defensive structure for the 2026/27 season before making a final decision.
The Catalans wish to consider Christensen’s contributions, potential market opportunities, and whether his injuries, which have troubled him in recent years, remain behind him.
Christensen keen on renewal
As far as the player is concerned, Christensen has already communicated his wish to renew his contract stay at the club and will wait for Barcelona’s decision.
The defender has had a marginal role this season but is knocking on Flick’s door with his impressive performance for Denmark in the previous and current international breaks.
Both Flick and sporting director Deco have praised Christensen’s work in the past, but the Catalans are in no hurry to open renewal talks.
Inside the club, the feeling is that there is no need to rush, particularly because the player’s desire to stay reduces the urgency for negotiations.
