Fox Sports college football analyst and Big Noon commentator Joel Klatt thinks the SEC does not have one of the country’s elite teams. Klatt did put five SEC teams in his top 10 rankings ahead of Week 7 college football action. However, he did not put any SEC team in his top three and thinks that three teams have separated themselves from the rest of the country to start the season.
“I think that the SEC doesn’t have a great team,” Klatt said on his podcast. “They’ve got a lot of good teams. They have not had a team separate themselves into the echelon of of the top three, who are going to be Miami, Oregon, and Ohio State in some some order. But they’ve got a lot of good teams and (Texas) A&M right now, at least for me, is at the class of that.”
We think Klatt’s analysis of the SEC is fair. Two of the conference’s top teams, the Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide, have already suffered losses. Preseason darling Texas already has a pair of one-score defeats.
The SEC’s three remaining undefeated teams are the Ole Miss Rebels, Texas A&M Aggies and Oklahoma Sooners. All of three of these teams have flaws and none of them made the College Football Playoff last season.
The trio have combined to play three total road games. Only Texas A&M has faced a difficult opponent (Notre Dame) on the road and they came one play away from losing that game. Oklahoma’s lone road game came against Temple and Ole Miss played SEC bottom-dweller Kentucky on the road.
Klatt went on to rank Ohio State No. 1, Oregon No. 2 and Miami No. 3. A lot of SEC schools are lurking behind those three, so we’ll see what SEC team can make a run to be one of the best teams in the nation.
