The Chicago Bears are preparing for a prime-time showdown against the Washington Commanders, where they’ll have a new starting left tackle tasked with protecting quarterback Caleb Williams.
Head coach Ben Johnson announced Saturday that former undrafted free agent Theo Benedet will make his first career start at left tackle when Chicago visits Washington on Monday Night Football. Benedet emerged as a contender for the starting job back in training camp. While the job initially went to incumbent starter Braxton Jones, the Bears are making a change fresh off the bye week.
Benedet made his first career start back in Week 4 against the Las Vegas Raiders, where he filled in for an injured Darnell Wright. But Benedet replaced a struggling Jones midway through the game, with rookie Ozzy Trapilo stepping in at right tackle, and the offensive line was the best it had been in that game.
Wright, who’s battling an elbow injury, was a limited participant during Friday’s practice, so his status remains up-in-the-air. If Wright can’t go, it’ll likely be Trapilo making his first career start.
