The Detroit Lions couldn’t keep up with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, losing 30-17 and falling to 4-2.
The Lions entered the game down several members of their secondary, and it showed as Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes carved up their defense for the majority of the night. The Lions offense also had a couple of tough breaks and some puzzling 3-and-out drives that left them too far behind to catch up about halfway through the fourth quarter.
This game was reminiscent of the Lions we saw in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers, where it seemed the fault was less on individuals and more on the performance of particular units as a whole. Detroit’s linebackers were outmatched as they tried to make up for a depleted secondary and hobbled safeties behind them.
Here are Studs and Duds from the Lions’ loss:
Stud: Sam LaPorta
Tight end Sam LaPorta impressed early and often on Sunday night, showing some of his ability to break through the second level of the defense and keep the Lions’ drives going. LaPorta’s best work came in the fourth quarter on a tough touchdown catch in the back of the endzone to get the Lions back into the game.

LaPorta caught five of six targets for 55 yards and the one touchdown.
Stud: Dan Skipper
Lions third-string tackle Dan Skipper is getting some credit here for jumping into the starting spot after being on the practice squad last week. Despite the shaky showing from the Lions offense at times, the offensive line held up well early on, and Skipper was virtually flawless.
Skipper was the only one of his running mates not to get dinged for a pressure on Goff until the last, desperate drive of the game.
Dud: Jack Campbell
It’s hard to criticize the Lions linebackers too much, given what they were surrounded by, but Mahomes’s short-to-middle-of-the-field throws were often open, and kept Chiefs drives going that otherwise should’ve stalled out.
According to Pro Football Focus, Campbell was the worst-rated Lion in pass coverage on Sunday night, giving up a particularly great game to Travis Kelce. Campbell was in coverage on Kelce for four targets, three of which were caught for 40 yards and three first-down conversions.
Dud: Tyler Lacy
Tyler Lacy got the start opposite Aidan Hutchinson on Sunday night and didn’t do much with it. Lacy logged 37 snaps, 18 of which he had an opportunity to make an impact on the Chiefs passing attack and he didn’t so much as sniff Mahomes.
Stud: Jameson Williams
Jameson Williams had a nice bounce-back game in Week 6 after a quiet last few games. Williams was second only to Amon-Ra St. Brown in targets, but outgained St. Brown with 66 yards and a touchdown that saw him take a couple of hits and get into the endzone.
Williams was a key part of the game plan early on, but the play-calling down the stretch couldn’t seem to keep him going.
