Former Vol announces football coaching change at UAB

Former Vol and UAB associate vice president and director of athletics Mark Ingram announced a football head coaching change for the Blazers after Week 7 of the 2025 season.

Trent Dilfer was relieved of his duties at UAB after 30 games. He compiled a 9-21 (5-14 AAC) record from 2023-25 as the Blazers’ head coach.

“We have made a decision to part ways with head football coach Trent Dilfer,” Ingram announced. “We agree that — unfortunately — our on-field performance has not lived up to the standard of winning we have for the program. This decision will allow us to move forward in the best long-term interest of the program.

“I have asked Alex Mortensen to serve as interim head coach to lead the team for the remainder of the season as we continue as a department and university to provide the support our student athletes need to compete. I wish coach Dilfer the best and thank him for his class, tireless work and commitment during his tenure at UAB. While his efforts did not translate into a winning record, each young man who played for him will be a better person as a result.”

Ingram played long snapper at Tennessee from 1995-96.

He completed a master’s degree in sports administration at Tennessee in 1997. He joined the Vols’ athletics department in 1998, serving as an assistant director of development.

Ingram returned to Tennessee in 2007 as senior associate athletics director after being an assistant athletics director for development at Missouri and Georgia from 2002-06.

The Vols defeated UAB and Dilfer, 56-24, on Sept. 20 at Neyland Stadium.
