'What in the world just happened': Social media reacts to Brewers' improbable double play started by Sal Frelick

Max Muncy‘s deep drive to centerfield first looked like a grand slam.

Then it appeared to be a spectacular catch by Sal Frelick.

But after the ball unfortunately popped out of Frelick’s glove it looked like a sure double, and trouble for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Seconds later, it was two huge outs.

Somehow, some way, a most unorthodox 8-6-2 double play got the Brewers out of a massive bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth inning in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Though the ball left Frelick’s golden glove for a moment, he was able to snatch it off the wall and hit cutoff man Joey Ortiz. Ortiz fired a strike to catcher William Contreras. Contreras was able to force a sliding Teoscar Hernandez out at home plate because Hernandez thought the ball had been caught and went back to touch third base.

Contreras then ran to third and tagged the bag to force Will Smith, who also went back to touch second base thinking Frelick had caught the ball.

Even Frelick, the main character in the phenomenal play, seemed puzzled as to what had happened.

Those highly unlikely heroics kept the Brewers in the game. The Brewers eventually lost 2-1 after leaving the bases loaded in the ninth inning.

Here’s some social reaction from those that were as mesmerized as the Dodgers baserunners when the play was over:
