Texans work out OTs Nicholas Petit-Frere, D’Ante Smith ahead of Week 7

The Houston Texans are looking for depth on the offensive line ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.

According to KPRC 2 Sports’ Aaron Wilson, the Texans worked out former Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and former Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle D’Ante Smith on Monday. Both players have tried out with several different teams earlier this year before heading to Houston on Monday for a tryout.

Both players left without signing a contract, though that doesn’t mean they won’t eventually come back and sign with the practice squad or active roster.

A former third-round draft pick from Ohio State, Petit-Frere, a 316-pound primary left tackle, became an All-Big Ten Conference selection and a second-team All-American during his tenure with the Buckeyes. He started 28 with the Titans before signing with the San Francisco 49ers earlier this offseason.

Petit-Frere served a six-game suspension from the league for a violation of its gambling policy earlier this season and became eligible to sign with a new team following Week 6. He was waived by the 49ers in June after the suspension came down.

Smith, a 6-foot-5, 309-pound East Carolina product, was drafted by the Bengals in the fourth. He started three games, but mostly served as a backup during his time in Cincinnati. Last season, Smith tore his patellar tendon and missed the entire year.

The Texans kick off at Lumen Field against the Seahawks next Monday at 9 p.m. CT. The game will be locally televised on ABC.
