The Boston Celtics might not have a set rotation this season, and coach Joe Mazzulla thinks that could actually be a strength of the team in the long run. If it sounds a bit confusing to say that Boston might actually be better off without the sort of structure that helped them win a title in 2025, we understand. But the Celtics coach elaborated on what he meant by that at a recent preseason press conference, suggesting that veering away from how previous iterations of the team has played might benefit the players suiting up for Boston now.
“Listen, every time you have a team, a strength, and a weakness, they can be very similar to those things, right?” asked Mazzulla via the CLNS Media Boston Sports Network. “I think one of our strengths is the depth that we have.”
“We may have a little inexperience, we may have newness, but I think … depth and I think the ability to not have a rotation is a strength because you can go to fresh guys,” he added.
“You can go to a bunch of different guys,” he continued, alluding to the shift away from vets brought in to win a title to rising prospects who might one day do the same, but for now lean on energy and athleticism in place of experience and skill. “You could do a bunch of different things.”
“So, we’re in the early stages of that. But I’m not sure that we will have (a rotation)”, he said. “I think that can actually be a good thing for us.”
