The college coaching carousel got a shot of adrenaline earlier this week when the Penn State Nittany Lions announced the firing of head coach James Franklin. Now, while fans and administrations are considering a long list of potential candidates, there’s one potential name that has been popping up.
While it may be aspirational, to say the least, some people are considering whether or not former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban would come out of retirement to take over at Penn State. He is arguably the greatest coach in college history, with seven national championships to his name at Alabama from 2007 to 2023. Since his time in Tuscaloosa, Saban has become one of the leading voices in the college football media world, joining the crew at ESPN’s ‘College GameDay’ as an analyst.
So would he give up his cushy media job to get back into coaching? On Saturday, that’s something that Saban’s wife, ‘Miss Terry,’ addressed, managing to poke some fun at Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart and Ole Miss Rebels coach Lane Kiffin in the process.
“I have no doubt that if Nick wanted to go back to coaching, he could win his eighth national championship,” Miss Terry said. “But we’re having too much fun, and we wouldn’t want to take that opportunity away from all of our baby coaches. Like Kirby and Lane.”
The buzz currently is regarding the Penn State job, which Saban said earlier this week was a premier job in the country.
“Obviously, they’ve got to hire somebody that has a history of having some success — someone who knows how to develop a program, continue to win, and deal with success,” Saban said on the Pat McAfee Show.
Sounds a lot like someone we know…
So would Saban come out of coaching retirement to try and get the Nittany Lions over the hump? It’s a question that is going to loom until Penn State makes a hire, but if we’re to listen to Miss Terry, it’s not going to happen.
