Super Rygbi Cymru: Carmarthen snatch late win against Newport

Newport missed a chance to get their first win of the season after losing by two points to Carmarthen Quins away from home.

Quins led 21-7 after tries by Rhys Fawcett, Gabe McDonald and Issac Young gave the home side a healthy lead.

Newport staged a brilliant comeback, scoring three tries in a row to make it 21-26 but a failed conversion by Jac Lloyd ended up proving costly.

Carmarthen scored a last-gasp try through Ilan Phillips with Elis Price converting as Quins made it 28-26 to snatch victory late on at The Park. The loss means Newport stay rooted to the bottom of the table, still searching for their first win of the season.

Three more games followed on Saturday, with Cardiff’s 45-26 win against Aberavon lifting them to seventh, just behind Pontypool who convincingly beat Bridgend 43-10. Swansea are up to third in the table after beating Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC) 38-31 away from home.

On Thursday night, Llandovery suffered their first loss of the season in a top-of-the-table clash against Ebbw Vale.

The back-to-back Premiership winners from 2022 to 2024 were beaten 40-22 away from home in a bonus-point victory.

The game took a turn with 32 minutes to go after former Scarlets centre Corey Baldwin was sent off for stamping on the face of home full-back Evan Lloyd.

The Drovers were then forced to play the rest of the match with 14 men as Ebbw Vale secured the victory and moved four points clear at the top of the table.
