The Chicago Bears made a move to add an edge rusher ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline when they acquired Joe Tryon-Shoyinka from the Cleveland Browns. But it sounds like he was Plan B for Chicago.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Bears were among the teams that tried to trade for New York Jets pass rusher Jermaine Johnson. Schultz noted that the Jets wanted a second-round pick, which sounds like it was too rich for Chicago.
The Bears then pivoted to Tryon-Shoyinka, who was acquired in a late-round pick exchange as Chicago sent a sixth-round pick for him and a seventh-round selection.
Johnson, a former first-round pick, is in the final year of his rookie contract, so the move would’ve likely come with a contract extension. In five games with the Jets, Johnson has totaled 19 tackles, one sack and one pass breakup.
Instead of giving up a premium second-round pick for Johnson, general manager Ryan Poles played it safe with Tryon-Shoyinka, who had 15 sacks in four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will now serve as key depth behind Montez Sweat and Austin Booker.
