The Pittsburgh Steelers left fans utterly disappointed at the NFL trade deadline — but according to one prominent insider, the organization was closer to acquiring Las Vegas Raiders WR Jakobi Meyers than some realize.
Following the breaking news of Meyers being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that one other team had interest in the talented former Raider — the Steelers.
“The one team that called on him was Pittsburgh,” Schefter said via The Pat McAfee Show. “Pittsburgh expressed some interest in Jakobi Meyers, but obviously Jacksonville really stepped up to get something done here. Those are the two teams, I think, that really wanted to add Meyers to the roster.”
The pursuit of Meyers could have been the potential move that Steelers HC Mike Tomlin hinted at ahead of the NFL trade deadline, telling reporters that he likes “shopping” when asked if Pittsburgh would be interested in making an acquisition on the important day.
With Meyers in Jacksonville and zero moves made at the trade deadline, the Steelers have no choice but to move forward with a wide receiver room led by DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, and Ben Skowronek — as well as the recent practice squad signing of veteran WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
