The New York Giants will travel to face the Chicago Bears on Sunday, marking the start of the final eight games in the regular season.
The Giants are coming off their third consecutive loss, which dropped them to 2-7 last Sunday. Although the Giants are effectively eliminated from playoff contention, the Bears — currently at 5-3 — remain in the race for the NFC North title and are one of three teams in their division with at least five wins.
The Giants opened as slight road underdogs earlier this week and have been underdogs in every game this season.
Here are three causes for concern ahead of Sunday’s NFC matchup:
The Bears are hot
After starting the season 0-2, the Bears have won five of their last six games, including two straight at Soldier Field. The Ben Johnson era in Chicago has proven successful thus far, as the Bears have demonstrated the ability to deliver decisive victories and secure wins in tight contests.
Trouble slowing down the Bears’ offense
The Giants enter Week 10 aiming to halt a three-game losing streak during which their defense has struggled to prevent opponents from scoring. Following five straight scoreless quarters in the second half of Week 5 and the first three quarters of Week 6, the Giants’ defense has allowed 105 points over the subsequent seven quarters. Compounding this issue, the Bears just posted a 47-point performance against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bears’ rushing attack
The Giants have struggled to contain the run game throughout the season. Last week, they surrendered 159 rushing yards to one of the league’s lowest-ranked rushing offenses. The Bears pose a far greater threat, averaging 144 rushing yards per game (second in the NFL) and attempting 29.4 rushes per contest (third in the league). The Bears would be prudent to emphasize their ground game early and often against a Giants defense that has difficulty stopping the run.
