Long the home of key players for the USMNT, Major League Soccer is winding down the 2025 season with the months long spectacle that is the MLS playoffs. Along with the conclusion of the season comes the annual awards. MLS announced its best XI on Wednesday and a quartet of USMNT players are represented amongst the award winners.
Midfielders Cristian Roldan and Sebastian Berhalter were recognized for their efforts as they both had stellar seasons. Roldan led Seattle to a Leagues Cup title and notched nine assists and three goals in his role as a tireless midfielder. His performance also brought him into a more prominent role with the national team as his veteran presence has been much needed internationally.
For his part, Berhalter had a breakout year after becoming a regular starter with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2024. His 11 assists and four goals helped Vancouver finish second in the West, winning the Canadian Championship along the way. The midfielder featured for the USMNT during the Gold Cup and could provide depth for the national team if his play remains consistent next season.
A duo of defenders join them as Alex Freeman and Tristan Blackmon earned spots on the list. Freeman also won Young Player of the Year and emerged as a regular call up for the USMNT. He notched six goals and three assists, but his passing in the attacking third was particularly impressive. His 42 key passes on the year was fourth most in the league.
Blackmon helped Vancouver keep 13 clean sheets, second most in the league, in 2025 and was named MLS Defender of the Year. His showing in the league earned him callups with the USMNT where he’s been given a chance to earn a spot on the backline, but so far hasn’t broken through as more than a bubble player internationally.
