On paper, the contrast is glaring, a clear mismatch. In one corner is Trevor Lawrence with a QB frame and look straight out of central casting. The former number one pick, National Champion, looking ever much the part at 6’6.
Then there’s Davis Mills, the presumptive starter with C.J. Stroud navigating concussion protocol. Mills has started 26 games in the NFL but is still largely an enigma. I’ve often thought if Mills was in line next to me at Whole Foods, would I or anyone else even notice. An NFL executive told me at the combine years ago that Mills would be “a serviceable back up” and thus far he’s been just that. Sunday at NRG, the Texans will need him to be much more.
Through eight games, the Texans have averaged 21 points per game. However in “winnable games” such as the opener against the Rams or Sunday’s defeat at the hands of Denver, they failed to reach that output, thus registering losses. Imagine being 5-3 instead of 3-5. That’s exactly the position that the Jaguars find themselves in.
Normally a home game appointment with an AFC foe would be welcomed relief but this Jaguars team appears to be slightly more resilient than squads of the past. Look to wins on the road, traveling cross country and knocking off the 49ers and Raiders as case studies.

Fox’s Chris Myers was on the call for Jacksonville’s latest road win and told Sporting News “The questions are still fair surrounding Trevor Lawrence as it’s year five and he’s yet to reach the upper level of QBs. His grit and toughness in rallying his team on the road, while being short handed at receiver will go a long way in answering some skeptics. His signature win was defeating the Chiefs earlier in the season, and in both games, he ran for key touchdowns which is something he told me that he likes to do because it triggers his Clemson days where his teams piled up wins.”
When asked how much recently acquired Jakobi Meyers will impact the Jaguars offense, he added “It’s help right at the deadline, but they’ll need more explosiveness in the passing game, until a hopeful return of health for Travis Hunter, or else it will continue to be Trevor on the run.”
A loss would drop Houston to 3-6. You’d have to go back to the 2012 Washington club to find a team who rebounded at that deficit to reach the playoffs.
