Instant reaction to Texas A&M's 104-70 home win over Texas Southern

Texas A&M (2-0) defended its home court for the second consecutive game after dispatching the Texas Southern Tigers 104-70, thanks to a dominant second-half performance. For the first time since 2017, the Aggies scored 100 points in a game.

While this is a notable achievement, it didn’t seem like the Aggies were up to the challenge in the first half. A&M appeared out of sync, with subpar shooting and a slew of turnovers. As the saying goes, “you live by the sword, you die by the sword,” and a big part of Bucky Ball is high-volume three-point shooting. In those first 20 minutes, they shot below 30 percent, going 5-of-17 from beyond the arc.

That was just the beginning of a rough shooting half, where they went 46.4% from the field, 29.4% from three, and 62.5% from the free-throw line. A disjointed half saw A&M take a slim 41-36 lead into the locker room as they prepared for the final 20 minutes of the game.

I have no clue what Coach Bucky told them at halftime, but it was like night and day. The defense tightened up, and the shots started falling. The second-half explosion was a collective effort, with Rashaun Agee, Rylan Griffen, and Federiko Federiko scoring the first 11 points for the Aggies. About three minutes into the half, A&M began to pull away. They went on to outscore the Tigers 26-8 over the next ten minutes. Texas Southern had no answers for the aggressive defense or the high-octane offense, as the Aggies improved in every statistical category in the second half.

When Coach Bucky took the job, he said the product he puts on the court would be appealing to both players and fans. He also emphasized that it was a proven system that would lead to plenty of wins. There’s still a lot to clean up, and it’s only been two games under a new system, new staff, and a new roster, but there’s plenty to be excited about moving forward.

Key Stats:

  • Texas A&M made 15 three-pointers, shooting 46.7% in the second half and 37.5% overall.
  • Agee led A&M in scoring with 16 points.
  • Holloway was perfect from the field, making all four shots and going 3-of-4 from the free-throw line for 12 points.
  • Texas A&M had 54 points off the bench.

Texas A&M will travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Sunday, November 9, at 1:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on ESPN2.
