The Indianapolis Colts are making a nearly 4,500-mile trip east to Europe for a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons in Berlin for Week 10.
One key part of their defense won’t be suiting up on international soil.
The Colts placed defensive tackle DeForest Buckner on injured reserve (IR) Nov. 7 because of a neck injury. This will keep him out of the lineup for at least four weeks as he recovers from an injury suffered in Week 9’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Buckner’s recorded 31 pressures and four sacks through nine games this season, both second-best on the team behind Laiatu Latu. He leads the team in NFL Pro‘s “stops” metric – a tackle that results in a successful play for the defense.
Buckner’s one of the most impactful defenders on the Colts’ defense this season. He’ll miss at least four weeks after which his practice window may be opened at any time and he’ll have 21 days to be moved back to the active roster.
With him out, the Colts will rely more on Neville Gallimore and Adetomiwa Adebawore in the middle of the defensive line alongside Grover Stewart. Latu’s going to shoulder even more of the load in the pass rush from the edge position.
When will DeForest Buckner return?
Buckner will be out for the next four weeks. That takes him out of the lineup for the Colts’ game against Atlanta in Week 10, at Kansas City in Week 12 and against Houston at home in Week 13. Indianapolis has its bye in Week 11 once the Colts return from Berlin.
Four weeks puts him back on the active roster by Dec. 5 at the earliest. That is two days before the Colts’ Week 14 matchup on the road against Jacksonville. That may be a quick turnaround depending on his recovery, so a return in Week 15 for the Colts’ road game against Seattle may be more likely.
