Lions 44, Commanders 22: Everything we know from Detroit's Week 10 road win

The Detroit Lions needed a win after a frustrating home loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9. Mission accomplished in the nation’s capital.

The Lions took command early and rediscovered the offensive firepower in a 44-22 win over the host Washington Commanders. The Lions scored on every offensive drive, not allowing a single sack and avoiding any takeaways.

Here’s what we know in the immediate aftermath of the game, from stats to stars, injuries and more.

It was over when…

The Lions topped Washington’s final total of 22 with a Jake Bates field goal just before halftime to go up 25-10. It was really over when the Lions took the kickoff to start the third quarter and drove 72 yards on five plays, capped with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Jameson Williams, who flipped into the end zone with a score that drained any real hope from the Washington sidelines.

Top Lions highlight of the game

There were quite a few choice cuts, but Jahmyr Gibbs’ second TD run of the game earns the nod. Watch right tackle Penei Sewell (No. 58) leading the way for Gibbs on the 44-yard jet into the end zone.

3 stars of the game

1. RB Jahmyr Gibbs: 142 rushing yards on 15 carries and 2 TDs, with 3 catches for 30 yards and 1 TD

2. WR Jameson Williams: 6 catches on 7 targets, 119 receiving yards and a touchdown

3. DB Brian Branch: Team-high 7 tackles, 1.5 TFLs, 1 sack and 1 PD

Honorable mentions: QB Jared Goff, DT Roy Lopez, LB Jack Campbell. And that definitely feels unfair to Goff…

Key points

–The Lions lost starting CB Terrion Arnold just before halftime to a concussion.

–Starting RT Penei Sewell left the game with a knee injury but returned quickly in the first half

–Starting C Graham Glasgow left in the first half with a back injury. He was listed as questionable and did return to the pivot in the second half.

–Washington DT DaRon Payne was ejected in the first half for slugging Amon-Ra St. Brown after the Lions’ second TD.

–Washington’s other starting DT, Javon Kinlaw, was also penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after the same play for apparently striking an official, though he was not ejected.

–Jameson Williams topped 100 receiving yards for the fifth time in his career.

–The Lions were flagged for three penalties that cost the team exactly one yard. A pass interference foul on Rock Ya-Sin was declined by the Commanders.

–Jake Bates had an extra point blocked, a week after Minnesota blocked a field goal attempt. Both were on Bates for a very low trajectory on his kicks.

–Play that made me smile and will make Dan Campbell smile, too: Avonte Maddox rocked Commanders TE Zach Ertz with a huge hit, but Ertz held onto the ball. Maddox showed Ertz love after the play as a sign of professional respect.

–Jack Campbell with a prime contender for tackle of the year:

–Counting the 1-play kneeldown just before halftime, Washington alternated punts and scores on its offensive drives throughout the game.

–Key play that deserves attention: Reserve CB Arthur Maulet made a great deflection on 3rd-and-short to force the Commanders to punt near the end of the third quarter, with the score 35-16. Lions D had been floundering a bit, and Maulet’s great reach came at a much-needed time.

What’s next for the Lions?

The 6-3 Lions will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles, who are 6-2 and play at Green Bay on Monday Night Football in Week 9.
