Eagles midseason report: The good, the bad, and the ugly of Philadelphia's roster moves

The Eagles, as the top seed in the NFC, are tied with Tampa Bay and Seattle for the best record (6-2) in the conference entering Week 10. Philadelphia has started 6-2 or better for the fourth consecutive year, tying the franchise record for the longest such stretch (also 1947-50). According to Elias Sports, Nick Sirianni is the fourth head coach in the Super Bowl Era to start 6-2 or better in four of their first five career seasons, along with Jon Gruden, Chuck Knox, and Mike Tomlin.

A team on the cusp of multiple Super Bowl runs is always doing due diligence on new talent, and GM Howie Roseman has made nine trades since the start of training camp, and three leading up to Tuesday’s November 4 deadline. Some moves have been hits, some have been misses, and some are still in play.

With the second half of the season set to begin, we’re looking at the good, the bad, and the ugly of Philadelphia’s off-season and in-season moves.

Best off-season move: Agreed to acquire T Fred Johnson from the Jaguars

Back in August, the Eagles agreed to acquire veteran tackle Fred Johnson from the Jaguars in exchange for Philadelphia’s 2026 seventh-round draft pick. After watching Matt Pryor struggle at the offensive tackle position, Johnson has flourished as the primary swing tackle, while logging heavy snaps as a third tight end in key formations. In the 38-20 win over the Giants in Week 8, Johnson saw 14 total snaps, but 10 came in the jumbo package. That increase came after he played 10 snaps in the jumbo package against the Vikings in Week 7. IN the win over New York, eight of those 10 plays on Sunday were runs that gained 114 yards and a touchdown, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. Saquon Barkley’s 65-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage came with Johnson on the edge in the jumbo set. The Jalen Hurts 79-yard bomb to DeVonta Smith came from under center, in the jumbo package with Johnson in the game.

Worst offseason move:  Agreed to acquire OL Kenyon Green and a 2026 fifth-round pick from Texans

The Texans made Green the 15th-overall pick in the 2022 draft. The versatile 6-foot-4, 323-pound blocker was a first-team All-American at Texas A&M and a finalist for the Lombardi Award as the nation’s top lineman. Green was traded to Philadelphia for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and both players have bounced around the NFL since late summer. Green has had three separate stints with the Eagles, while also spending time with the Ravens.

Need more time to decide: OL Willie Lampkin

Lampkin, who signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent, was claimed by the Eagles after roster cutdown day. He was placed on Injured Reserve two days later. He’s an intriguing player, and at just 5-foot-11, the offensive lineman started his college career at Coastal Carolina before transferring to North Carolina. Lampkin earned first-team All-American honors in 2024 as one of the top offensive linemen in college football.

Lampkin impressed in the preseason with the Rams but was waived with an injury designation as part of roster cuts.

Future looks bright: OLB Jaelan Phillips

Among the trade candidates that Philadelphia had interest in were Phillips, pass rusher Bradley Chubb, and pass rusher Matthew Judon. Phillips made the most sense and had his best and most productive season playing for Vic Fangio in Miami. During that 2023 stretch with Fangio, Phillips notched 6.5 sacks in only eight games with six starts after previously posting 8.5 and seven-sack seasons as a rookie and second-year player.

Phillips is a talented player who has dealt with injuries but has been impactful when healthy. Phillips has played all nine games this season, generating three sacks, seven QB hits, and 25 tackles.
