New York Giants report card: How we graded Big Blue in Week 10 loss

The New York Giants fell, 24-20, to the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field. It was their sixth road loss of the season and their 11th consecutive loss away from home, a new franchise record.

Here’s how we graded the units in the latest deflating loss.

Offense

Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart had a solid game, for three quarters, that is. Fighting the elements at Soldier Field, Dart completed 19 of 29 passes for 242 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He ran for 66 yards and two scores. He left the game after the third quarter with a concussion, giving way to Russell Wilson. The Giants only managed three points on four drives behind Wilson.

Some notable performances by wide receiver Darius Slayton and tight end Theo Johnson. Slayton caught all four of those targets for 89 yards and made an eye-popping one-handed grab. Johnson had seven receptions for 75 yards and is beginning to forge some symmetry with Dart. Running backs Tyrone Tracy Jr. (71 yards rushing on 14 carries) and Devin Singletary (73 total yards, including a 41-yard catch and run) both had solid outings.

The bottom line: One-for-four on fourth down and one-for-four in the red zone.

Defense

Again, three quarters of bend-but-don’t-break followed by fourth quarter chaos. Two touchdowns in the last four minutes is unacceptable. The pass rush was all over Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, but he was not sacked. Their red zone struggles continued, allowing the Bears to score touchdowns on three of their four trips. The Giants allowed four first downs via penalties.

Defensive end Brian Burns had a strong game with five total stops, two QB hits, a tackle for a loss, and a batted pass. Reserve linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles led the team with seven total tackles, along with a pass defensed and a QB hit.

Grade: C

Special teams

Usually not a problem area, but in this game it was. Punter Jamie Gillan, who was charged with kicking off, booted the opening kickoff out of bounds, and another didn’t reach the landing zone. Both drew penalties. His 26-yard punt late in the fourth quarter led to the Bears’ winning score.

Kicker Younghoe Koo had a perfect debut, booting field goals of 19 and 32 yards and converting two extra points. Deonte Banks had a 39-yard kickoff return.

Grade: C

Coaching

Time is running out for this group. Head coach Brian Daboll is 11-33 since being named the NFL Coach of the Year in 2022. The Giants are headed for another double-digit loss season, their 10th in 12 years. He has not done many things right in the past two-and-a-half years, and the future is cloudy, even with Dart under center.

The decision to kick a field goal in the fourth quarter rather than try ot punch it in from a half-yard out came back to haunt him. It was just one of many poor fourth-quarter moves the Giants have made this year. Many thought they should have relieved Dart with Jameis Winston instead of Wilson, who has been abysmal in the red zone this year.
