Tennessee football announces uniform combination for New Mexico State game

Tennessee football will wear an alternate uniform against in its penultimate home game.

The No. 20 Vols (6-3, 3-3 SEC) will wear this season’s Smokey Grey alternate when they face New Mexico State (3-6) on Nov. 15 (4:15 p.m. ET, SEC Network) at Neyland Stadium, UT announced Nov. 10.

The uniforms are inspired by the “Volunteer Spirit” of American military service.

They are the third rendition of the Smokey Grey series intended to honor and pay homage to individuals and people.

In the 2023 season, UT’s “Artful Dodger” Smokey Grey uniforms paid homage to trailblazer and former Vols quarterback Condredge Holloway. He was the first Black player to start at quarterback for an SEC program.

In the 2024 season, UT wore its “Volunteer State” Smokey Grey uniform, which was inspired by the Tri-Star emblem on the state flag.

Tennessee is wearing Nike uniforms in the 2025 season before switching to Adidas prior to the 2026 season.

What uniforms has Tennessee football worn this season?

The Vols wore their usual home uniform of orange jerseys with white pants and white helmets in a season-opening 45-26 win against Syracuse on Aug. 30 in Atlanta. They wore the same combination for a 72-17 win against ETSU at Neyland Stadium on Sept. 6 and again in a 44-41 overtime loss to Georgia on Sept. 13.

UT busted out the orange britches against UAB on Sept. 20, wearing orange jerseys and orange pants with white helmets for its 56-24 victory.

Tennessee wore orange pants with orange jerseys and white helmets again for its 41-34 overtime win at Mississippi State on Sept. 27. It turned to the home getup of orange jerseys with white pants and white helmets for its 34-31 win against Arkansas on Oct. 11.

UT wore all-white uniforms against Alabama on Oct. 18 and again against Kentucky on Oct. 25.

It went with “dark mode” uniforms for its 33-27 loss to Oklahoma on Nov. 1.

What alternate uniforms does Tennessee football wear?

The Vols wore a handful of alternate uniforms in the 2024 season.

Tennessee wore its Smokey Grey alternate uniforms in its 69-3 win against Chattanooga in the season opener on Aug. 31, 2024.

It marked the second straight season UT has unveiled a new version of the Smokey Grey uniforms. This edition was focused on celebrating the state of Tennessee. It has the tri-star logo on the shoulder and the pants, Tennessee on the chest and a helmet stripe and pants to mimic the state flag.

Tennessee went with its dark mode uniforms in its 28-18 win against Kentucky on Nov. 2, the third straight season in which the Vols wore black uniforms and black pants with a black helmet. It beat South Carolina 41-20 on Sept. 30, 2023, and topped Kentucky 44-6 on Oct. 29, 2022, in dark mode.

UT added “Summitt Blue” accents to its classic home kit of white helmets, orange jerseys and white pants in a 33-14 win over Mississippi State on Nov. 9, 2024.
