New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye’s words should serve as a warning for defenders who let rookies TreVeyon Henderson and Kyle Williams get in front of them.
“You’re not catching them.”
Maye was asked about the rookies generating the three most explosive plays of the game that helped the team edge out the Buccaneers by a 28-23 margin.
He connected with Williams on a 72-yard touchdown strike that resulted in the rookie receiver speeding past defenders on the sideline all the way to the end zone. Then Henderson torched the Buccaneers for two touchdowns, including a 55-yarder and a 69-yarder.
“Kyle got out the back door. He’s fast. You’re not going to catch him,” Maye told reporters. “You know, him and [No.] 32, TreVeyon, if they get going, you’re not catching them. So, I’m just proud of him for stepping up. He only got maybe one target and made it count.”
Henderson is getting more opportunities with Rhamondre Stevenson sidelined with a toe injury. Williams’ increased snap count came after Kayshon Boutte went down with a hamstring injury against the Atlanta Falcons.
The rookies are the future of the team, and if their performance last week is any indication, the future is looking incredibly bright in New England.
