VfL Wolfsburg have parted ways with sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz, the Bundesliga club said in a statement on Thursday.

Schindzielorz was part of Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga-winning team in 2009 and returned to the club as sporting director in February 2023.

This season, however, he’s being reportedly held responsible for the bad squad planning in a major upheaval this summer.

Transfers such as Brazilian Vinicius Souza and Danish player Jesper Lindström have so not fulfilled the expectations, while the urgently needed centre forward didn’t arrive in the summer.

“Sebastian has always given his all for VfL Wolfsburg, with loyalty, commitment and great professional expertise. However, given the team’s current sporting situation, we’ve decided that we need new impetus in this position,” managing director for sport Peter Christiansen.

Wolfsburg are 14th in the Bundesliga, with six defeats in 10 games. On Sunday, they sacked coach Paul Simonis. Under-19 coach Daniel Bauer has taken temporary charge.
