On Saturday night after BC football had a tough finish against Georgia Tech, the men’s hockey team traveled over to Amherst to play their in-state Hockey East rival UMass. After dismantling the Minutemen at home on Friday night, the Eagles’ trip down the Mass Pike was just as fruitful as their home stand, getting a shutout 4-0 victory and completing the series sweep.
The first period was rather even, with both teams getting opportunities to score and each goalie standing tall in net. But the ice really started to tilt in the second period. BC controlled the puck for most of the frame and eventually put one in the net first, as Paul Davey opened up the scoring with a laser from the faceoff circle. The Minutemen had hung tough with the Eagles despite facing the onslaught of offense, but goalie Jackson Irving wasn’t able to hold steady forever.
In the third period, the Eagles poured it on Irving. Jake Sondreal got a redirect goal about 7 minutes into the period to give BC a 2-0 lead. And then Dean Letourneau found Sondreal again in front of the net a few minutes later for his second goal of the game. UMass had a few more offensive opportunities late in the game, especially after Dean Letourneau and Landan Resendes penalties, but they just couldn’t convert. Ryan Conmy scored an empty-netter from center ice with about 5 minutes remaining to truly put the game away.
Louka Cloutier finished with his second shutout in three games, after blanking the Vermont Catamounts in Burlington last weekend. BC is now 6-4-1 and has jumped to the top of Hockey East standings early in the season. It was also nice to see that their Terrier rivals fell tonight 6-2 against Quinnipiac down in Connecticut. The Eagles next play a home series against the Maine Black Bears on November 21 and 22 at Conte.
