4 standouts from Packers' Week 11 win over the Giants

Drops were an issue for the Green Bay Packers throughout Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, but they held on when it mattered most. The Packers rallied late and made the necessary stops to defeat the Giants 27-20 in Week 11 to improve to 6-3-1 and snap a two-game losing streak.

The drops weren’t just on offense, either. Making his first start of the season, Jameis Winston lived up to his gunslinger persona and threw a handful of passes that should have been caught by Green Bay defenders. Winston almost got away unscathed until a back-breaking interception on the second-to-last possession.

Offensively, the Packers had to navigate most of the game without Josh Jacobs, who exited during the first half with a knee injury and never returned. Green Bay remained committed to running the ball, however, finishing with 128 rushing yards and an average of 5.6 yards per carry.

Jordan Love also had to leave with an injury, but returned and was efficient for most of the day, throwing two touchdowns.

The Packers desperately needed a win coming off two disappointing performances against the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles. New York has had a lot of close calls this season and gave Green Bay a run for its money despite coming into the game with four straight losses.

Next week, the Packers will play another team that is floundering, the 4-6 Minnesota Vikings, who have lost four out of their last five. But before we look ahead, let’s highlight the standouts from Green Bay’s one-score win over the Giants.

QB Malik Willis

The Packers’ investment in a backup quarterback paid off once again on Sunday. Willis was forced to step in after Love left briefly with a shoulder injury on a scramble, just minutes after the defense allowed an opening-drive touchdown. He kept the offense on track with a 16-yard run and one of the more impressive one-yard touchdown throws you’ll see for the Packers’ first touchdown of the game. Unfortunately, backup kicker Lucas Havrisik’s missed extra point kept the score at 7-6. Green Bay acquired Willis for a seventh-round pick before last season, and he won two games as a starter in Love’s absence. Today, he showed once again why having a capable backup can be the difference between a win and a loss.

WR Christian Watson

Watson accomplished the rare feat of catching a touchdown from two different quarterbacks in the same game. He was on the receiving end of Willis’ touchdown pass, which was not an easy catch with a defender draped on him. Watson was responsible for one of the team’s many drops on a crucial third down in the second half, but he bounced back by snagging the go-ahead touchdown in the corner of the end zone with four minutes remaining. Watson finished the day with just four catches for 46 yards, but expect his role to keep growing as the team continues to ramp up his snap count since returning from injury.

S Evan Williams

Big-time players show up in big-time moments. This week, one of the big-time players was Williams, who saved Green Bay’s defense by intercepting Winston in the end zone with 40 seconds remaining. Trailing by seven, the Giants had driven the ball to the Packers’ 14-yard line before Williams made Winston pay for his errant throw. It was Williams’ second interception in what has been a strong year for the 2024 fourth-round pick. In addition to the takeaway, he finished second on the team with nine total tackles.

Edge Micah Parsons

The Giants’ offense did take the field one more time after Williams’ pick. New York used all three of their timeouts to get the ball back with 10 seconds left, but after a 61-yard punt by Daniel Whelan, they were forced to start from their own 35. The Giants ran one play, and despite taking on multiple blockers, Parsons still got home for a strip sack that Rashan Gary recovered. Parsons came up big earlier in the game as well, combining for a sack with Isaiah McDuffie on 4th and 3 in the red zone to keep New York from scoring. The trade for Parsons continues to pay off as he was once again one of the key reasons why Green Bay was victorious.
