Former German international Jérôme Boateng has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of his ex-girlfiend, Kasia Lenhardt, in a new documentary.

“I lost someone I loved very much,” the 37-year-old says of Lenhardt, who died by suicide in February 2021 in Berlin.

“I’ve noticed publicly that my right to grieve is being questioned,” he says in the three-part series “Being Jérôme Boateng,” which begins airing on German broadcaster ARD starting on Friday.

“I’m still processing her death,” he said.

The relationship between the former Bayern Munich defender and Lenhardt, who was a finalist on “Germany’s Next Topmodel,” had attracted media attention for their public spats.

Boateng made incendiary allegations against her in an interview conducted shortly after their breakup and just days before her death.

In the documentary, Boateng calls the interview a mistake.

“What’s clear and obvious to me is that I misjudged the situation in retrospect and should have handled it better, differently,” the 2014 World Cup winner said.

The Berlin-born defender, who announced his retirment in September, has wanted to go into coaching.

But an internship at his long-time club, Bayern, alongside his former teammate Vincent Kompany recently failed due to fierce fan protests.

“Jérôme feels a strong connection to FC Bayern and doesn’t want FC Bayern to suffer any damage because of the current controversial discussion surrounding him,” the club announced in October.

Fans’ objections are linked in part to a 2024 Munich court ruling that found Boateng guilty of intentional bodily harm against an ex-girlfriend, resulting in a caution. Boateng has denied ever assaulting a woman.
