J.P. Estrella left Tennessee basketball‘s game against Rice on Nov. 17 with an apparent left knee injury.
The Vols forward battled for a rebound twice by the rim before coming down with it. He fell backward after losing the ball and immediately clutched his left knee. Rice forward Stephen Giwa appeared to fall on Estrella’s knee.
Estrella went down by the free-throw line. Trainer Chad Newman checked on Estrella on the court with his teammates huddled around him. He was helped off and down the tunnel.
The forward from Maine has been an early season superstar for the No. 17 Vols (3-0), averaging 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds through three games. He had four points against Rice before leaving.
He has dealt with injuries throughout his Tennessee career.
Estrella missed all but three games in the 2024-25 season after having season-ending surgery on his left foot in November. He dealt with an ankle injury in the preseason.
