Dayton Raiola, brother of Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola, has reportedly de-committed from the school two weeks before signing day, according to Rivals.
Dayton confirmed the news to Chad Simmons of Rivals, saying, “My recruitment is 100% open.”
Dayton, a three-star quarterback, has been committed to Nebraska for over a year. It’s unclear why Dayton decided to de-commit so late in the process, or if this means anything for Dylan’s status at the school.
Dylan was in the midst of a breakout sophomore season before breaking his leg during a Nov. 1 game against USC. He’s expected to miss the rest of the year due to the issue. If Dylan decides to return to Nebraska, he’ll almost certainly be the team’s starting quarterback next season. Dylan reportedly had suitors who tried to get him to transfer following a rocky freshman year, but he decided to return to Nebraska for Year 2.
With Dylan sidelined, freshman TJ Lateef has performed well in limited duty. During his first college start, Lateef threw for 205 yards and three touchdowns in a win over UCLA. He’ll likely remain in the starting role moving forward barring an injury. As long as Lateef continues to put up solid numbers, he’ll most likely enter next season as Dylan’s backup.
It’s unclear where Dayton will wind up following Wednesday’s news. With just weeks left until signing day, Dayton is now the top non-committed quarterback available. He’ll likely wind up with a few suitors over the next couple weeks.
While Dayton should be fine, the de-commit is a blow to Nebraska, which only has nine commitments so far, the lowest total in of any program in the FBS, per Rivals.
