Gotham FC are National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) champions!

The team won it all during their match against the Washington Spirit at PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 22.

Gotham FC, who previously earned the top title in 2023, marked their second win in three years. The Washington Spirit was defeated 1-0 during the team’s latest match.

Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós told ESPN’s Futbol W, “We’ve had a rollercoaster of a year, so I think to get this is the icing on the cake.”

“We know that we underperformed during the season. But with that being said, we know the talent that we have in the locker room, and we knew when we bring our best, the sky’s the limit,” he added. “We can do so much with this group. So, I think we really leaned on that during this playoff run, and it worked out. We have such a special group, and I’m so excited to be able to win this with them.”

Gotham’s road to the final was unlikely.

Snagging an eighth seed to make it into the postseason, the team defeated a historic Kansas City Current squad and then beat the reigning NWSL champions, the Orlando Pride.

The Spirit had limited play from star player Trinity Rodman, who sustained a low-grade MCL sprain during a game last month and returned to action during the team’s semifinal last week, when she was subbed in at the 90th minute of the match.

“It felt amazing,” Rodman, 23, told reporters after the semifinal game. “If I get 30 seconds, or if I get 90 minutes, it feels great to be out there.”

Rodman’s appearance was her last before she became an unrestricted free agent, making her future in D.C. — and the NWSL — uncertain, with many American players opting to take their talents overseas in the last two years.

“Right now, my head’s completely down. It’s been so distracting being injured, and that’s all I can really think about,” Rodman said about reports regarding her future.

She added, “Once we get this championship, then I can start making decisions and figuring out what next year looks like for me.”
