The penultimate week of the college football season, while largely lackluster, still provided some chaos and fireworks.
No. 5 Oregon (No. 7 in College Football Playoff rankings) picked up a late resume-boosting win for its College Football Playoff hopes, beating No. 16 USC (No. 15 in CFP rankings). Dante Moore threw just seven incompletions and finished with 257 yards and two touchdowns in the Ducks’ 42-27 win over the Trojans, a win that should help Dan Lanning’s squad host a CFP first-round game.
Thanks to Mason Heintschel and Pitt, the ACC standings continue to be crowded after the Panthers knocked off Haynes King and No. 12 Georgia Tech (No. 16 in CFP rankings). The Panthers remain in the mix for the ACC championship game along with Virginia, SMU and Miami.
No. 9 Notre Dame (No. 9 in CFP rankings) had a historic day against Syracuse, as the Fighting Irish scored three non-offensive touchdowns — two interception returns and a blocked punt — before their first offensive snap. Jeremiyah Love finished with three touchdowns on eight carries and 171 rushing yards for good measure as the Fighting Irish routed the Orange 70-7 at Notre Dame Stadium.
Each of the remaining top four teams from last week’s US LBM Coaches Poll in action won their games in Week 13: No. 1 Ohio State (No. 1 in CFP rankings) defeated Rutgers 42-9; No. 3 Texas A&M (No. 3 in CFP rankings) defeated Samford 48-0; and No. 4 Georgia (No. 4 in CPF rankings) defeated Charlotte 35-3. No. 2 Indiana (No. 2 in CFP rankings) was on bye.
In Group of Five play, No. 25 Tulane (No. 24 in CFP rankings) and James Madison each won their respective games, keeping them in the mix for a spot in the CFP.
