The Washington Commanders haven’t had the season they or their fans envisioned in 2025. The Commanders are 3-8 and have lost six games in a row since their Week 5 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
After going 12-5 and advancing to the NFC Championship Game in 2024, the Commanders brought back several key free agents from last season, hoping to make another run while quarterback Jayden Daniels was on his rookie contract. Injuries had other plans. Washington has lost numerous starters on both sides of the ball for either the season or extended periods, including Daniels (5 games) and wide receiver Terry McLaurin (7 games). McLaurin missed only three games in his six-year career before this season.
The injuries have impacted the offense, with Daniels and McLaurin only having limited work this season, dating back to McLaurin skipping offseason work and missing training camp and the preseason while at odds with the Commanders over his contract.
The defense has also dealt with major injuries, but standout players from 2024 have taken a step back in 2025. Therefore, that unit has regressed, ranking among the NFL’s worst, which has led to four consecutive blowout losses.
The Commanders are expected to be busy this offseason. General manager Adam Peters will need to reshape the roster again and do so without a full slate of draft picks. Washington is set to have 32 free agents in 2026. Most of those free agents are unlikely to return as the Commanders look to get younger. Some of the players on expiring deals are players signed this summer or during the season, as Washington began dealing with injuries.
