Longhorns star Colin Simmons is adding to his trophy case. The talented sophomore has been named the SEC’s Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week. Against Arkansas on Saturday, he was a human highlight reel as Texas bounced back from one of its worst games of the season.
In the Longhorns’ 52-37 victory, Simmons set the tone defensively. He recorded five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and a career-high four pressures. Simmons also forced a fumble that Liona Lefau returned for a 52-yard touchdown. His was the latest display of excellence from one of the nation’s best players.

Following his latest stellar performance, the Texas native has a team-leading 10 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss. He also leads the Longhorns in pressures with 12 and forced fumbles with three. Regardless of the opponent, Simmons has found a way to make life difficult for offenses. That has also been reflected in where he ranks in the conference.
Through 11 games, Simmons’ .91 sacks are the second best in the SEC and seventh best in the nation. The Longhorns’ star also ranks fifth in forced fumbles. With Simmons leading the way, Texas ranks third in the nation in sacks, sixth in fourth down conversion, and eighth in rushing defense. As the offense has struggled at times, the defense has been reliable.

On Friday, Simmons will get to build on his performance against Texas A&M. That will not be an easy matchup, as the Aggies are currently ranked third in the country. However, for Simmons, that should only bring out his best, as it will be a chance to show why he has a very bright future.
