The Toronto Blue Jays made the biggest move of the offseason thus far, the day before Thanksgiving. They went out and signed one of the biggest pitchers on the open market, Dylan Cease.
The two sides agreed to a seven-year, $210 million contract with opt-outs. He now serves as an immediate frontline starter for a team that already had a solid starting rotation going into the new season.
Cease’s signing could be the catalyst for other big-name free agents to sign their deals. Do not be surprised if things start to heat up here.
Former Blue Jays slugger applauds ownership for its effort in signing Dylan Cease
Dylan Cease is coming off a season with the San Diego Padres, where he started 32 games, compiling an 8-12 record with a 4.55 ERA. Despite that being his worst season in the past five years, analysts are still high on him to return to form in 2026 and be a dependable starting pitcher.
Former Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar could not be happier with the decision to go out and get Cease. He spoke his mind about the move via Foul Territory.
“The front office, and most importantly, their ownership group, is not messing around.”
Pillar spent seven seasons in Toronto and is happy to see the front office and ownership group going all out after the success they just had. They could have kept quiet this offseason, being happy with a World Series appearance this past season, but no. They have goals to take this team a step above where they were in 2025.
Now, the attention turns to whether they will be able to retain Bo Bichette or not. However, by signing Cease, they may have to get creative with the contract they can offer their All-Star slugging shortstop.
