'He wins': What Brent Venables, Jim Nagy said about QB Bowe Bentley

The Oklahoma Sooners added one of the best quarterbacks in the 2026 recruiting class when Bowe Bentley signed to play football for the program. The No. 5 quarterback in the class, according to Rivals, and No. 2 per ESPN, will come to Norman after a stellar high school career at Celina (Texas).

Bentley committed to the Sooners in June, and his pledge never wavered. He was a big get for offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and head coach Brent Venables, who were dueling it out with LSU in the lead-up to his commitment day.

In Bentley, the Sooners added a dual-threat quarterback, an athlete who can make plays on the move, has the ability to pick up yards in the running game, and has a big-time arm. He’s a multi-sport athlete, playing soccer and lacrosse as well during his high school days. Speaking on the first day of the early signing period, here’s what Venables and general manager Jim Nagy had to say about their new quarterback.

“He wins,” Venables said. “A great competitor, the accuracy he throws with, the anticipation he throws with, the guts and the toughness he plays with, he’s got a great disposition for it, unlike a middle linebacker or an alpha that’s barking all the time. Bowe is pretty cerebral, reminds you a little bit of Sam Bradford from that standpoint. Never too high, never too low. Every environment he’s in, he loves to compete.”

“I think you just say he’s a winner. He’s never lost a game,” Nagy said. “The cool thing with Bowe being so close to home is he’s been here basically every week. He’s been around this team. He’s seen why this team has been successful, the grittiness by this team to go 10-2, and he’s just been around it. It feels like Bowe’s been a part of this team, a couple of these guys, Noah Best, I mean there’s a few guys that have been at it feels like every game. But for our future leader of this football team to be around it and see John and see this team has been really valuable. So love Bowe Bentley, love all he’s about.”

Football is the ultimate team sport, but it’s one that still looks to the quarterback to set the tone for the team. The expectations for Bentley will be high, but that’s what comes with playing quarterback at the University of Oklahoma. But the Sooners’ decision makers believe in his ability to be a difference maker for the program.
