Liverpool are not going to make a move for Nico Schlotterbeck in January
One key area that Liverpool still need to improve is their defence.
Although Arne Slot and Richard Hughes spent a hefty chunk of change on signing new defenders, the fact they missed out on Guehi is seemingly haunting them.
That is, especially with the recent form that Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have put on display.
This is why it’s somewhat surprising to see the Reds about to make the same mistake once again.
As per a report from German outlet SPORT BILD, Liverpool don’t see Schlotterbeck as a ‘top priority’ despite recently discussing a move with Borussia Dortmund.
A potential move for both the winter and summer transfer windows were discussed but now, it seems like the Reds are set to focus their attention on different targets.
This has resulted in the clubs ‘management’ deciding against making an offer for the German any time soon.
Liverpool could have the perfect Virgil van Dijk replacement in Nico Schlotterbeck
Schlotterbeck is Dortmund’s best centre-back with the Bundesliga outfit doing everything they can to try and get him to extend his stay at Signal Iduna Park.
The German can be used as a centre-back or as a left-back with his playing style almost perfect for the Reds’ current setup.
He’s also a ball playing defender who often comes out on top during one-on-one situations.
Each of these things make the 26-year-old sound like the perfect target for Liverpool and since his contract runs out next summer, he could be available for a decent price.
Of course, Guehi will likely be the number one target on Hughes’ shortlist this term, but, if another club beats the Anfield outfit to his transfer, it makes sense for them to have some back-up options.
And, since Schlotterbeck is left-footed, he’d be a perfect replacement for Liverpool’s captain, especially with the amount of experience he has under his belt.
