Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco replaces Joe Burrow vs Dolphins

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco replaced starter Joe Burrow during the fourth quarter of the team’s NFL Week 16 game against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Bengals were leading 45-14 when Flacco entered the game. It’s the first time Flacco has played in a game since Nov. 23 against the New England Patriots.

Burrow completed 25 of his 32 attempts for 309 passing yards with four touchdown passes. He was sacked twice.

Flacco suffered a finger injury during the fourth quarter of the team’s NFL Week 12 loss to the Pats at Paycor Stadium. Flacco was replaced by backup Jake Browning, who completed his only pass attempt.

Flacco returned to the game a short time later, with his pointer finger on his throwing hand taped. Flacco told reporters after the game that his finger was “all bent up and dislocated.”

After watching starter Joe Burrow do 11-on-11 work for the first time since returning to practice, Flacco acknowledged that he still feels funny saying “Who Dey.”

Flacco played through pain in the Bengals’ Week 11 loss against Pittsburgh. Flacco also played with a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder during a 47-42 loss to Chicago in Week 9.

At 40 years old, Flacco became the oldest quarterback in NFL history to pass for 470 yards in a game.

Flacco was asked Nov. 12 whether he thinks about Burrow’s return to practice, and what it means for Flacco’s potentially imminent return to a backup role.

“I’m honestly not really thinking about it. It’s not really a part of my process,” Flacco said. “I really don’t care. It’s this week, and that’s all that matters. And I think to think about that stuff would just be a distraction.”
